CR 210's Westbound Lanes Are Back Open Before the First Bell Aug. 10

All westbound lanes of County Road 210 were set to be back open by the end of the day Friday, July 31, St. Johns County said, clearing the northwest county's busiest school-run corridor nine days before St. Johns County School District students return to class on Monday, Aug. 10. For families in Shearwater, Julington Creek and the Greenbriar Road area, that means the morning drop-off run through the widening zone should not start the year inside a lane closure.

The county confirmed crews had finished enough of the westbound side to put all lanes back in service by the close of the week. Work on the project continues.

What is actually being built

The job runs 2.3 miles, from the existing four lanes at Cimarrone Boulevard west to the Greenbriar Road intersection. The road is being rebuilt, not just widened: a two-lane urban divided arterial becomes four lanes with a 22-foot median, 4-foot bike lanes and intersection improvements at Greenbriar. The county budgeted $30.5 million for the work in fiscal year 2025 and $21.3 million in fiscal 2026.

Drivers on that stretch have been moved around more than once. In March the county rerouted traffic through the CR 210, Old CR 210 and Greenbriar intersection so crews could rebuild it. County project updates have pointed to completion of the Greenbriar-to-Cimarrone segment this summer.

CR 210 work has already produced one finish line this year. The separate improvements from I-95 to U.S. 1, an $18.7 million project, wrapped up with a ribbon-cutting on April 24. That one widened about seven-tenths of a mile from two lanes to six between Trinity Way and Beachwalk Boulevard, added sidewalks and curbing on both sides, and put a new signal at Badger Park Drive and Cumberland Park Drive.

SR 16 near International Golf Parkway

County officials say the State Road 16 widening near International Golf Parkway and St. Johns Parkway is 60% complete. Drainage work near IGP is expected to finish by Aug. 9, the Sunday before school starts.

The bigger change for that corridor comes later. A contractor is installing temporary signalization for an eastbound traffic shift running from the AutoZone through the existing corridor, and officials expect that shift after Labor Day. World Golf Village-area commuters should plan on a new pattern in September, not August.

CR 16A closes again this weekend

First Coast Expressway construction shuts CR 16A between Timberwolf Trail and River Reach Parkway from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10. That is the same closure pattern used the previous weekend, from 8 p.m. Friday, July 31 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3. Crews need the road shut to install pipe across it. Detour traffic goes around on State Road 16 and State Road 13.

Note the end time. The road is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, which is the first morning of school. If it runs long, the detour lands on the worst possible day, so build in a cushion.

The wider picture

St. Johns County is managing 44 active road projects this year with a combined budget of $183.1 million. That volume is why the county's own project pages have become required reading for anyone who commutes through the northwest corner of the county.

Between now and the first day of school, the moving pieces are the CR 16A weekend closure and the tail end of the SR 16 drainage work. After that, watch for the eastbound SR 16 shift once Labor Day passes, and for further lane changes on CR 210 as crews build the neighborhood access ramps that tie the new pavement to the old.
